My name is John Roberts.  I have been with Cartwright School District for twelve years.  Eleven of those years have been in fourth grade at Barry School and this is my second year at Pena in third grade.  I graduated from Eastern Connecticut State University with a major in elementary education.  My personal goal is to see that all students grow to their full potential.  I agree with the idea that taking responsibility for one's own learning is an important step.  All children can and want to succeed.  When they are encouraged to set meaningful goals and are given the means to achieve them, they can see the path to success.  By taking responsibility,  they will also see the challenges.  My role is to facilitate the growth by doing whatever it takes to keep them on the right path and help with the challenges.  I can be reached at 623-691-3100.    jroberts@pena.cartwright.k12.az.us

Math Fact Study
In our math studies we are working hard on addition and subtraction facts.  These will prove to be an important foundation as we continue on to multiplication and division.  I plan to send flash cards home and would encourage parents to use them with students.
A reading session of just ten or fifteen minutes each night at home will help greatly to advance reading levels.  A short conversation about what was read after these sessions is a great idea as well.  Practice provides the experience we need to grow.
